Emergency medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with evaluation & initial treatment of medical conditions caused by trauma or sudden illness.
Typically, as an emergency medicine specialist you or your team may have to diagnose & treat conditions needing immediate attention, including illness, trauma, and industrial, sports, and occupational accidents.
PSD & military field medics may be in a combat situation and have deal with anything from gunshot to burns. Further, as field emergency medical personnel you may deal with both personnel casualties & the delivery of care outside the hospital environment; or trauma management from basic life-saving skills to advanced interventions prior to definitive care.
Field medicine can & should be preventive medicine and mitigation of other threats to mission accomplishment; identification and management of global infectious diseases; and the unique stressors such as combat, low-intensity conflict, and humanitarian assistance.
