START was created by Hoag Hospital, Newport Beach Fire Department and the Newport Beach (CA) Fire Department
The START plan (Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment) was developed by the Hoag Hospital, Newport Beach Fire Department and the Newport Beach (CA) Fire Department to be used in the event of a multiple casuality incident (MCI). Many large cities use this sytem. These pages are from the NYC*EMS Emergency Medical Specialist Protocols.
This plan allows EMTs and Paramedics to triage a patient at an MCI in 60 seconds or less.

The plan is based on three observations:

• Respirations
• Circulations
• Mental Status
  
  Most trauma patients die within the first hour (the Golden Hour) after sustaining their injuries mostly due to respiratory complications.insuffucuency, exsanguination, or CNS trauma.
  This START kit is designed for every situation you may find and provide simple treatment in a disaster situation.
